Catch & Roll To encourage the children’s fine motor skills and improve on the ability to grasp and/or hold bottles and sippy cups.
Materials:
Ball
Large floor space
Beginning: Sing “This is the Way We Roll a Ball” (tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Middle: Children will start by having the ball bounced to them, motivating them to catch it and bounce it back.
Earlier: Rolling the ball for the earlier students. Later: Tossing the ball to the later students
End: The activity comes to an end when the children no longer express interest and crawl or walk away.
Follow-Up Ideas: Taking the activity to the gym and extending the amount of space between the who’s rolling and who’s catching.

Shape Sorting To encourage the children’s fine motor skills and improve on the ability recognize shapes.

Variety of shapes
Shape sorter that can fit the variety of shapes
Floor space/mat
Beginning: Read “Shapes are Everywhere” by Charles Ghigna
Middle: Children will start by watching a teacher put a shape in the correct shaped hole, then be given shapes to do on their own.
Earlier: The teacher will point the and guide the child towards the right space. Later: Using the shape sorter push toy, encouraging the child to move while finding the right shape.
End: The activity comes to an end when the children no longer express interest and crawl or walk away.
Follow-Up Ideas: Calling out the names of the shapes one by one and having the children either point to or pick up the shape that is called.
